New Gun In Mosquito Control

Hot, sticky and swarming with mosquitoes, that’s what the Mississippi Delta feels like on a random summer morning at 5:30. This week, I was excited to read that there is a new “gun in town” to fight the Mosquito Wars.

EPA has granted registration approval for a new killer that is supposed to take out the adult mosquito by preventing growth development in the juvenile. Somehow I picture the juveniles as young samari swordsmen ready to stab me quick and then run to the next victim. Does this mean, they get to start wielding their swords and suddenly fall off my arm dead just as they move into “adult” action? I don’t know, but whatever does the job of making those pesky critters disappear is fine with me. The fact that this “gun” appears to work well in flooded areas is even better news.

Take a look at the excerpts below from a Valent Biosciences Corporation press release. I like all the rhetoric, especially if this new development means I might get 5 minutes standing near a rice field without spending most of that time swatting!

New Growth Regulator Prevents Maturation of Mosquito Larvae

Valent BioSciences Corporation (VBC) announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted registration approval for MetaLarvTM S-PT Mosquito Growth Regulator. MetaLarv S-PT contains the active ingredient S-methoprene, an insect juvenile hormone analog which prevents the development of mosquito larvae into the adult mosquito stage where certain species may be capable of transmitting harmful diseases such as West Nile virus, dengue fever, malaria, and encephalitis.

MetaLarv S-PT will allow mosquito control professionals the operational flexibility to apply mosquito larvicides to areas prior to flooding. Through its advanced Triple-Release Technology, MetaLarv S-PT can be applied up to 28 days prior to flooding and control adult emergence for up to 42 days after flooding, regardless of dry-down and re-flood conditions.

In addition to its ability to provide residual control of floodwater mosquitoes, MetaLarv S-PT’s unique pellet formulation and spherical shape is virtually dust free and allows for more effective low-rate applications, improved aerial application swaths, and greater point-source coverage. These features improve upon current pellet offerings by reducing operational costs, improving worker cleanliness and providing greater peace of mind.

See you in the field.

Dear Debra,I am glad to here about the Mosquito Growth Regulator. Will the label allow flooded rice fields to be treated, and if so what is the cost per acre?
