First 2011 Louisiana Rice Harvest – No Combine Used Here

No equipment check or fuel fill-up was required for this rice harvest, just plenty of hands on deck to do the work.

On July 7, bundles of rice were hand-harvested and tagged at the LSU AgCenter Rice Research plots managed by Dr. Steve Linscombe and Dr. Xueyan Sha.

The rice is part of the F1 generation developed for variety improvement. The seed was planted in a green house in mid- February, and then transplanted to the field when the weather warmed up.

The dried seed will be planted in cells and shipped to the winter nursery facility near Lajas, Puerto Rico, for planting in  late July/early August.  The winter nursery allows these breeding projects to conduct varietal improvement research year-around.
